Canadian soccer star Alphonso Davies clarifies cryptic social-media post - CBC.ca

Injured Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies found himself having to explain a social media post Wednesday on the eve of Canada's World Cup qualifying game against El Salvador.

Davies, who flew to Germany on Tuesday night to return to his club for injury assessment, left more than a few scratching their head when he posted a photo of himself in Munich smiling with the caption: "They won't realize how big a part you play, until you're not there to play it anymore."

The post, complete with a victory hand emoji, went to his four million Instagram followers.

The 20-year-old subsequently put out a tweet clarifying the earlier post, complete with a photo showing him pointing at the Canada crest on his jersey..

"The caption was just a caption, please don't read into it," he told his 291,800 Twitter followers. "I fully support the national team and there are no issues. I wish I could be there with the team tonight to represent my country. It's disappointing but I can't wait to be back on the pitch with them in October."

Canada has three World Cup qualifying games scheduled for next month, away to Mexico and Jamaica and at home to Panama.

The Canadian men, who tied Honduras and the U.S. prior to the El Salvador game in Toronto, are bidding to qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 1986.
