University of Oxford students' fury over Dinah Rose's same-sex marriage case - The Times

Defining the Bar’s “cab rank” rule can involve nimble thinking but one simple explanation may stand above all others.

“I’m a black taxi, plying for hire,” said Horace Rumpole, John Mortimer’s much-loved fictional criminal barrister, “I’m bound to accept anyone, however repulsive, who waves me down and asks for a lift.”

Mortimer is likely to be smiling wryly from the robing room in the sky as that venerable professional rule faces increased scrutiny.

Essentially, the rule requires barristers to take the first set of instructions that come through the door, provided that they are qualified to do so, although many say that the requirement is more honoured in the breach.
