When I was growing up, people seemed carefree about the information they placed on luggage tags. That is, until their luggage went missing. After this experience, some people changed their approach and began meticulously recording personal details on luggage tags.
These days, however, there is a reluctance to place too much information on luggage tags because people are concerned about how others will use their information and how that would impact their privacy and safety.
In terms of privacy, the advent of data protection legislation in many countries has caused people to demand more control over their own data. Some travellers therefore adopt the practice of sharing as little information where possible.
Where data is stolen, a number of things could happen. Someone could use the data to discover important information like where you live, possibly putting you or your family in danger. Infamous serial killer, Charles Sobhraj, was known for profiling victims and then traveling on their passports.
Bearing this story in mind, the last thing you may want is for a random stranger in the airport knowing where you live.
On the other hand, airports probably prefer to have more information on your bag tags rather than less. This is for a number of reasons, including identifying your bag in case of a mix-up or you forgetting to collect it in the baggage claim.
