It was my day - Pooran after win over Tallawahs | Loop Cayman Islands - Loop News Cayman

Nicholas Pooran was elated after his 75 not out led the Guyana Amazon Warriors to a 46-run win over the Jamaica Tallawahs on Saturday.

The 25-year-old has been short of runs this season, scoring 153 runs in eight matches before Saturday's encounter with the Tallawahs.

The win lifted the Amazon Warriors to second in the table, while the Tallawahs dropped to fifth and out of the playoff spot.

"I know I was due and there was no better opportunity for me. Today was my day," Pooran said after the match.

The Amazon Warriors captain used his spinners for nine overs, with Gudakesh Motie taking 3/25.

The seamers did the job for Pooran with Odean Smith impressing again (3/21) and Naveen-ul-Haq taking 2/8.

Romario Shepherd, who missed out on a spot in the West Indies team for the T20 World Cup, had 1/31.

"I knew it was better for the spinners. I just wanted to get a few overs in from my pacers but I wanted to use my spinners for the main overs. Our local players have been doing good. Gudakesh and Odean Smith have been doing well so why not trust them," Pooran said.

Reacting to the loss, Tallawahs skipper Rovman Powell lamented not getting enough runs in the middle overs.

"Our batting in the middle overs was our downfall. I'm not carrying on. I'm getting some scores here and there but just not carrying on for the big one."

The teams meet again on Sunday at 2:30 pm.
