BARRINGTON — Under the heading "End of Watch: 9/11/21" the Barrington Police Department released on Facebook and Twitter the news that one of its officers had lost a five-week battle with COVID.
The posts said:
"Chief Michael E. Correia and the members of the Barrington Police Department announce with heavy hearts the death of Sergeant Gino Caputo after a 5 week battle against COVID-19. Sergeant Caputo, who was a 27 year veteran of the Department, died yesterday morning surrounded by his wife Cindy and Family members.
"Funeral arrangements are forthcoming.
"Please keep Cindy and his Family in your thoughts and prayers. Rest In Peace, Gino.
"Respectfully,
"The Barrington Police Department"
Almost immediately, other police departments around the state began reposting Chief Correia's message on their social media accounts and adding their department's condolences.
The Twitter and Facebook posts show a photo collage of a sergeant's badge bearing a black band with a blue stripe, Sgt. Caputo standing with officers on either side, a black cloth draped to frame the Public Safety Building sign, and Caputo's S-1 patrol car, with a buddy bumper in front.
Caputo died on the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. On Sept. 11, 2001, he had been a Barrington policeman for seven years.
