Each year, MBJ honors the top legal minds in the Mid-South with the annual Best of the Bar awards. The 2021 honorees include attorneys from some of the preeminent law firms in Memphis to public sector practitioners to legal entrepreneurs. And their practice areas are just as varied, with education, family, and immigration law — plus commercial litigation and criminal prosecution and defense all represented.
This year’s group of legal eagles runs the gamut from veterans of many arguments and trials to some professionals early into what promises to be long careers. The honorees were selected by MBJ’s editorial team.
Here is one of those 2021 Best of the Bar honorees:
Henry Reaves, Reaves Law Firm
Law school: Indiana University
Area of practice: Personal injury
Favorite TV or movie lawyer: Ben Matlock from “Matlock”
Ask Henry Reaves what makes him an effective lawyer, and he’s likely to give you an answer like this: “I’m a fighter, and I’m not scared to get beat up.”
Reaves’ record backs up his talk, as the local attorney has been put through the wringer in his life and career, only to get back on his feet and find ways to succeed.
After leaving the Tennessee-based firm Leitner, Williams, Dooley & Napolitan in 2011, he struggled to find a job, and at one point found himself applying for a position selling snacks at FedExForum.
When he decided to start his own firm, he had to take out a high-interest title loan on his family’s 2000 Honda Odyssey, just to afford a printer...
