Shooting of SC attorney Alex Murdaugh was a fraud scheme, SLED says, arresting one suspect - Charleston Post Courier

HAMPTON — State investigators have arrested a suspect on allegations he shot prominent attorney Alex Murdaugh in the head over Labor Day weekend as part of an attempted suicide scheme to fraudulently collect on a $10 million insurance policy.
State Law Enforcement Division agents arrested Curtis Edward Smith on Sept. 14 in connection with the staged shooting along a rural Hampton County road, according to SLED spokesman Tommy Crosby.
Smith, 61, is charged with assisted suicide, assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, pointing and presenting a firearm, insurance fraud, and conspiracy to commit insurance fraud. He remained in custody the night of Sept. 14 at the Colleton County jail.
Murdaugh, 53, admitted in a statement to state investigators Sept. 13 that he asked Smith to kill him so he could collect a life insurance policy worth approximately $10 million to help his son, according to arrest warrant affidavits.
Affidavits describe Murdaugh as a co-defendant in the alleged conspiracy. He has not been arrested, but one of his attorneys indicated Sept. 15 that he fully expects that to happen.
In Wednesday morning interview with NBC’s Craig Melvin, Columbia attorney Dick Harpootlian acknowledged for the first time that Murdaugh embezzled money from the family law firm, writing checks to drug dealers to support an opioid addiction.
