Strong immune systems important in the fight against COVID19 | Loop Cayman Islands - Loop News Cayman

Following the government’s announcement of new COVID-19 regulations, businesses, schools and other entities in the Cayman Islands have enacted their COVID-19 preparedness plans. This includes social distancing, sanitization and other safety procedures recommended by experts to lessen the spread of COVID-19. However, what seems to be missing from the conversation is the importance of maintaining good health and a strong immune system.

The promotion of proactive health measures seems logical because case studies suggest that people with stronger immune systems may have a better chance of fighting disease than those with weaker immune systems. This is also relevant to vulnerable groups with pre-existing chronic medical conditions or other diseases.

According to Harvard Health Publishing, “a person with a weakened immune system may not be able to produce a strong enough immune response to the standard, two-dose COVID mRNA vaccine regimen. This leaves them more likely to have a breakthrough infection, and increases the risk of more severe disease if they do become infected. A third vaccine dose may enhance the immune response in some people who are immunocompromised.”

Dr Darley Solomon, MD, a general surgeon at Doctors Hospital, shared information from Dr. Cristina Palacios, an associate professor in the Department of Dietetics & Nutrition at Florida International University.
