Man charged in Alex Murdaugh shooting, insurance fraud was once his client - ABC NEWS 4

HAMPTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) — A decade before Alex Murdaugh and Curtis Smith were embroiled in an alleged failed suicide plot they had a different relationship- that of client and attorney.
Murdaugh’s firm PMPED- the one he resigned from after accusations of stealing money- represented Curtis "Eddie" Smith.
Murdaugh represented him twice in court.
Once in 2013 for a traffic ticket, but the other though was exactly what the Murdaugh family firm was famous for: personal injury.
In 2007, Curtis Smith came to the Murdaughs for help after he said he was injured on the job.
Smith sued American Forest Management in Colleton County court after he says he jumped over a ditch and fell, injuring his spine and knee.
He claimed to be permanently disabled from the accident
Under oath, Smith testified that he was taking oxycontin for pain after the accident.
Murdaugh himself said he battles an addiction to opioids.
Susan E. Williams, a criminal defense attorney in Summerville, said she is not surprised there is an earlier connection between Smith and Murdaugh.
“On the one hand it seems like a strange coincidence, but knowing how small Hampton is and Colleton, it really doesn’t surprise me,” Williams said.
In a statement, Alex Murdaugh’s attorneys Dick Harpootlian and Jim Griffin said:
"For the last 20 years, there have been many people feeding his addiction to opioids. During that time, these individuals took advantage of his addiction and his ability to pay substantial funds for illegal...
