FRESNO, Calif. (FOX26) — Schools around the country are dealing with a huge uptick in vandalism, specifically to bathrooms all tied to a social media challenge.
The challenge, mostly on the platform "TikTok", consists of students dumping red dye all over toilets and sinks.
Other times, whole sinks and toilets have been destroyed.
And in some cases, fire extinguishers and other property is stolen.
Schools in the Central Valley have started to experience issues with the so-called challenge.
“It has come to our attention that there is a TikTok challenge to vandalize restrooms at school sites, make a video of the act, and post it on TikTok,” said a recorded message sent to parents at Tenaya Middle School in Fresno.
Administrators with Selma Unified aren’t taking this latest TikTok challenge lightly.
Those at Selma High went as far as shutting down some restrooms on campus, leaving students to use restrooms in the office while they assessed the damage.
“Because we took quick action in shutting down our bathrooms, informing our students of what was happening and encouraging them, expecting them to follow our rules and take care of our property. I think we might have limited the damage that was done to our campus,” said Norma Barajas-Ruiz, Director of State and Federal Programs with Selma Unified .
