Growing up and watching his father transform high school basketball in San Antonio, Stan E. Bonewitz had modest goals.
His father, Stan J. Bonewitz Jr., introduced a frenetic style of play at East Central in the mid- 1980s through necessity. Bonewitz joined his father's Hornets as a freshman and in his junior season later sparked a remarkable two-year run that is as good any in San Antonio boys basketball history.
For his prominent role on those transformative teams, a solid college career at Texas Tech and his current stint as the men's basketball coach at Concordia in Austin, Bonewitz was selected for the 2020 San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame.
"Watching what he did for the game of basketball and how he transformed it in the city of San Antonio and to be a youngster cheering to being an actual member of the team and then to achieve that goal and then to be in the same Hall with him is pretty neat," Bonewitz said.
From high school, Bonewitz played guard for four years at Texas Tech and started in his last three.
In his 18th season at Concordia, Bonewitz employs a similar structure he played in at East Central.
