“Cyber Security as an Instrument of National Power” is the topic Nov. 17 in the monthly luncheon from the World Affairs Council of Greater Reading.

Retired Navy Capt. Paul Tortora is the speaker for the virtual event at noon.

Tortora is the director of the Center for Cyber Security Studies and was the first chairman of the Cyber Science Department at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.

Tortora recently retired from the Navy following a 26-year active duty career as a nuclear submarine officer and a naval intelligence officer, organizers said.

During his active service he served and deployed on two nuclear fast-attack submarines, two amphibious assault ships and a nuclear aircraft carrier, conducting peacetime and combat operations across the globe, organizers said.

“My Life as an Intel Field Operator” is the topic Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. for the monthly meeting of the Longswamp Township Historical Society.

The free meeting is at Longswamp UCC, 200 Clay Road, in the township.

Retired Navy and CIA station chief Scott Uelinger shares his intelligence service experience.

Fundraiser with psychic

Psychic Nellie Walter is the presenter Nov. 16 at 6:30 p.m. for a fundraiser for the Muhlenberg Community Library.

The event will be at the Muhlenberg Township Recreation Building, 3025 River Road. Face coverings are required.

Boyertown opera house

The Fleetwood Area Historical Society members and all guests can learn about Boyertown opera house fire during a meeting Nov. 17.

The fire during a play at the Rhoads Opera House killed 171 people on Jan. 13, 1908. It remains the greatest mass casualty event in Berks County history.

Margaret Harner of the Boyertown Historical Society will give the free presentation in the historical society’s meeting room at the Fleetwood Community Center, 110 W. Arch St.

All are welcome.

Leesport Historical Society

The Leesport Area Historical Society presents “Memories of a Bygone Era” on Nov. 22 at 7 p.m.

The free program at Bethany EC Church, 308 Main St., Leesport, features author Paul Miller, who will share the history of South Mountain.

The parking lot and entrance is in the rear of the church.

Christmas bazaar

The Christmas bazaar at St. Paul’s UCC Church, 301 W. Penn Ave., Robesonia, is scheduled for Nov. 20 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

There will homemade candy, soup and barbecue, with a large basket raffle.

Tower Health nurses win awards

Three Tower Health nurses recently earned the 2021 Nightingale Award of Pennsylvania

The Reading Hospital perioperative team led by Julie Schlappich was the recipient of the inaugural Patient Choice Team Award.

Emma Harris was the recipient of the Clinical Practice RN award, and Amanda Hart received the Advanced Practice RN award.

Mary Agnew, chief nursing officer, was selected as a finalist in the category of executive nursing practice.

“I am proud of all the Tower Health nursing nominees, finalists, and winners recognized in the 2021 Nightingale Awards,” Tower Health CEO P. Sue Perrotty said in a press release. “Each day our talented nurses demonstrate their commitment to our patients and the community. No matter the challenges they face they continue to provide the highest-quality care and it is an honor to support and recognize their work.”

Nightingale Award of Pennsylvania honors are based on the demonstration of excellence in several areas, including how each nurse influences the quality of patient care, creates a collaborative environment for the practice of nursing, models caring and compassion and contributes to healing and health in the community, organizers said.
