Fantasy Author Jay Roland: From the Streets of Flint Michigan to Epic Worlds and Systems Thinking

CLARKSVILLE, TN (AP) - Jay Roland, an emerging voice in fantasy literature and systems innovation, is quickly establishing himself as a modern Renaissance thinker. Best known for his 2023 debut fantasy novel Shadow of the Soul Blade, Jay blends his lifelong passions for storytelling, martial arts, and leadership philosophy into a distinctive creative journey that is as disciplined as it is imaginative.

Born Jason A. Roland on August 4, 1981, in Flint, Michigan, Jay’s early life in the working-class Beecher district was marked by frequent moves between his parents’ households. While the instability presented its share of challenges - cycling through ten schools before graduation - it also helped cultivate a talent for observation, adaptation, and empathy.

From a young age, Jay found refuge in stories. Inspired by fantasy and sci-fi films such as The Princess Bride, The NeverEnding Story, and Star Wars, he became fascinated by worldbuilding, symbolism, and archetypal narrative. That fascination deepened in his teens through theater, marching band, and eventually the Michigan Renaissance Festival, where he began to explore historical martial arts and live performance.

At 15, Jay’s creative life changed course when he was introduced to Dungeons & Dragons by a friend. That single campaign sparked a lifelong obsession with fantasy lore, collaborative storytelling, and game mechanics - interests that would later resurface in both his fiction and professional philosophies.

The Years That Shaped Him

At 16, Jay made a life-changing decision: he ran away from home to work full-time at the Michigan Renaissance Festival, embracing a world of performance, self-expression, and hard lessons. A year later, at just 17, he officially dropped out of high school. For a time, he found himself homeless, living under a bridge in downtown Flint.

It was a period of hardship and solitude - but not without hope. A friend eventually took him in, offering a couch and a second chance. That act of kindness became a turning point. Jay credits that chapter of his life with giving him the resilience and raw perspective that would later shape both his leadership philosophy and the emotional truth behind his characters.

At 18, Jay landed his first role in IT at Mich.com, a pioneering internet service provider based in Pontiac, Michigan. It was the beginning of a lifelong career in technology. After stabilizing his circumstances, Jay returned to complete his high school education, determined to build a future not just for himself, but for the legacy he hoped to leave behind.

"Those were some of the hardest days of my life," Jay says. "But they taught me how to fight, how to adapt - and how much it matters to have someone believe in you."

Structured Fantasy, Real Combat

Jay’s commitment to realism in fantasy combat stems from an eclectic martial arts background. From Shaolin Kung Fu and Japanese Kenjutsu to French-Italian fencing and modern HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts), he’s spent decades studying swordplay across cultural styles. That realism is evident in the tactical choreography and movement theory embedded in Shadow of the Soul Blade - where battles aren’t just action sequences but carefully crafted expressions of character and philosophy.

Tech, Transformation, and Teaching

While pursuing creative work, Jay built a parallel career in information technology, steadily rising through technical and leadership roles. He cycled through a variety of industries - from ISPs and insurance to managed property maintenance - gaining hands-on experience across multiple environments.

In 2014, Jay accepted a pivotal leadership position with a logistics company based in Rochester Hills, Michigan. That role marked his formal transition into IT leadership, where he began aligning technical strategy with business operations at a high level. It was a defining step that would propel him into enterprise architecture and strategic systems design.

By 2017, Jay was serving as an IT Director, and now operates in corporate leadership, where he specializes in enterprise service management, organizational frameworks, and transformational leadership.

Along the way, Jay developed a strong commitment to teaching. He frequently mentors professionals in both technical and creative spheres, believing that "the final step of mastery is teaching someone else." He also created Synergistic Mathematics, a conceptual framework designed to understand complex interactions across disciplines - from team dynamics to metaphysical systems.

The Birth of Ashana

In 2018, a health transformation sparked renewed creative focus. After self-publishing a wellness book titled Conquering Keto, Jay revisited an old RPG setting called Darkthorne. That rediscovery led to the creation of the fantasy world of Ashana, the setting for Shadow of the Soul Blade. Drawing from years of tabletop gameplay, martial theory, and philosophical reflection, Jay Roland crafted a novel centered on four protagonists, each embodying different views of power, purpose, and sacrifice.

Jay wrote the manuscript over two years while maintaining his full-time leadership role in IT. The novel was beta-tested, professionally edited, and published independently via Amazon KDP in May 2023. Readers praised the novel for its richly textured world, mature themes, and emotionally resonant story arcs.

"I didn’t want to write fantasy for spectacle," Jay says. "I wanted to write something that stuck with you. Something that speaks to the reader’s heart and soul."

An audiobook version of Shadow of the Soul Blade is currently in production and set to release in Summer 2025, introducing the world of Ashana to a whole new audience of immersive story lovers.

Looking Ahead

Today, Jay Roland continues to write, mentor, and develop new systems for both fantasy storytelling and real-world leadership. His upcoming anthology, The Stillwater Mysteries, explores eerie, slow-burn stories grounded in Midwestern realism with a metaphysical edge - echoing the tone of The Twilight Zone and Stand By Me.

Whether building operational frameworks, designing game mechanics, or scripting epic sagas, Jay insists that logic and creativity are not opposing forces - they are collaborators.

"At the end of the day, I’m trying to build things that last," he says. "Stories, systems, memories. Whatever the form, it’s about impact."
