In today's challenging economic landscape, running a successful home improvement company requires more than just technical expertise. For DaBella CEO Donnie McMillan Jr., success comes from understanding both market dynamics and human nature. With 54 locations across the United States, DaBella has found ways to thrive despite rising interest rates and more inflationary pressures on consumers.

## Navigating Economic Headwinds

McMillan recalls. "The average consumer has five credit cards. When the interest rates were zero, the average interest rate was 12.99%. The same five credit cards now carry a 21.99% interest rate."

In response to these economic pressures, DaBella has developed innovative financing solutions. "Now DaBella offers amazing financing packages, so we could take loans from them for up to 240 months instead of short-term loans, so they can afford to get their house up and running," McMillan explains. This approach helps customers manage smaller monthly payments while still getting necessary home improvements completed.

DaBella's success isn't just about external operations. The company maintains a unique approach to leadership development, committing significant resources to employee growth. "Say about 90% of our employees at a minimum get that. If you're in leadership or management, you're doing those classes," McMillan notes about the firm's training programs.

For executives joining the company, there's a specific requirement: "As I keep on executives even today, if they don't come from within the company, they're required to spend time in each one of those roles that report to them before they can leave them."

One of DaBella's most distinctive features is its approach to hiring. "We're a second-chance company for a lot of people," McMillan shares. "The required experience — we'll train that for you." This philosophy has created opportunities for many who might otherwise be overlooked in traditional hiring processes.

## Growing Through Strategic Partnerships

DaBella has secured unique positions within the industry through strategic partnerships. "We're the only company in the United States that is exclusive for [certain products]. As an example, [manufacturers] generally don't go exclusive to anybody. But we have that," McMillan explains. These relationships have helped DaBella maintain quality control and offer unique products to customers.

DaBella's commitment to community service is another partnership that McMillan is proud of. In October 2024, DaBella raised $280,000 for cancer charities through its DaBella Cares initiative. "It's not just about growing the business. It's about making a difference, one home at a time," McMillan says.

## Looking Ahead

Despite economic challenges,DaBella maintains ambitious growth plans while remaining debt-free. "I think that helps us out with our customer and our employee base, knowing that we are going to be here forever as long as we make smart decisions with what we have," McMillan says.

This balanced approach to growth, combined with careful attention to economic conditions and customer needs, has positioned DaBella for continued success. As McMillan puts it, "Every voice here matters," reflecting a leadership style that values input at all levels while maintaining clear strategic direction.

The company has expanded into sustainable home improvements, with energy-efficient windows becoming its second-largest product class. DaBella's recent venture into solar roofing demonstrates their commitment to innovation while maintaining quality standards.

"As we start to look at sustainability," McMillan explains, "one of our largest product classes is energy-efficient windows." This focus on energy efficiency responds to growing consumer demand while providing practical value to homeowners.

The company's expansion into solar solutions has been particularly strategic. Rather than rushing to market, DaBella waited for the right product that met the company's standards. "There's two things for me. If I can't guarantee it for a customer and go, 'This is the best quality that's out there,'" McMillan notes, "I won't use it."

The company's success stems from its ability to balance growth with responsibility, innovation with reliability, and business success with social impact. Under Donnie McMillan Jr.'s leadership, DaBella continues to demonstrate that successful business growth and social responsibility can go hand in hand.
