Few food and beverages (F&B) establishments in Bangkok are as versatile as Bird House Cafe & Bar. Located in the heart of Sukhumvit, it opens early and stays open till late, seamlessly transitioning from a café to a bar throughout the day. This multi-concept venue appeals to a diverse crowd, including morning regulars, lunchtime patrons, and groups looking for post-work dinner plans.

Since its opening in July last year, Bird House Cafe & Bar has broadened its offerings to cater to its wide range of patron profiles.

In the mornings, Bird House operates as a café, serving a dedicated breakfast menu till 11am. In addition to serving sandwiches all day, the cafe has recently expanded its menu to include rice bowls and wraps, which have quickly become some of its most popular items. Additionally, Bird House has added cold brew coffee and high-quality matcha to its beverage menu, both of which are now highly sought out by weekday regulars and weekend families.

“During the day and over the weekends, we welcome many families,” says founder Nikhil Rattanaphas. “They often spend a significant amount of time in our cafe, and we have made small improvements to enhance their customer experience. We’ve added more tables outside, introduced more food for sharing, and created drinks that encourage patrons to linger. Our goal is to make Bird House a place for everyone.”

At night, Bird House transforms into a lively bar where most guests gather around the bar itself, and the drinks menu takes center stage. The bar recently expanded its selection of taps to ten. Currently, they feature a rotating selection of craft beers from local Thai breweries, including organic ciders, stouts, IPAs, and seasonal brews.

“We chose to keep our taps dynamic to allow for introducing new options whenever necessary,” says Rattanaphas. “Currently, we’re serving 10 taps with a range of Lagers, Fruit Beers, IPAs and Belgian Ales. We also stock the fridge with a range of imported and local cans from across Thailand, including names typically only found at festivals or specialty shops.”

Bird House currently sources its wines from JDSS, a Bangkok-based importer of premium wines, whiskies, spirits and other alcoholic beverages. In recent months, the bar has expanded its wine list, introducing more bottles to support evening service and private events. The list features a Pouilly Fumé, several Saint Emilion reds, and Australian selections from Amelia Park Reserve. The bar also has started offering a curated lineup of spirits, including four Japanese whiskies, a single gin, and a few classic Scotch labels.

“We are expanding our wine list thoughtfully so the team is well-acquainted with each bottle,” says Rattanaphas. “Most of the wines pair well with food or can stand alone for those who simply want a glass. We also brought in a few labels that are harder to find, which offer great conversation starters at the bar.”

A strong relationship between Rattanaphas and Thanit Apipatana has been instrumental in the success of Bird House today. Apipatana, the establishment’s key advisor and investor, has worked closely with Rattanaphas from the outset to define the restaurant’s offerings and overall direction.

Rattanaphas currently runs Bird House’s operations and oversees the guest experience, while Apipatana provides strategic advice on key decisions that the cafe takes, such as menu planning, pricing and hiring. Their collaboration is marked by regular check-ins, clear feedback, and a shared vision to grow the business. This has enabled Bird House to adapt swiftly to customer feedback and expand its capacity to host events.

Since it launched, Bird House has notably become a go-to venue for private dinners and casual gatherings. Patrons have hosted birthdays, reunions and small group meetups at the cafe, which offers a suitable, customised set-up fit for the occasion.

“Most of these events are not planned far in advance,” says Rattanaphas. “Someone comes in for a drink, mentions a birthday or a group dinner, and we sort it out. It’s low pressure. People know what to expect, and that familiarity makes it easy for them to invite others.”

It is the same spirit of flexibility that has contributed significantly to the success of Bird House. Looking ahead, Apipatana affirms that this approach will remain central to the cafe and bar’s identity. “There is no fixed idea of what Bird House has to be,” he says. “We are committed to the fundamentals — good food, good drinks and a space people trust — but we are also open to gradual improvements to enhance our patrons’ experience.”

Thanit Apipatana is a Bangkok-based entrepreneur, investor, and startup advisor with a keen interest in venture building, real estate, F&B, sports and philanthropy. Mr. Apipatana has advised and invested in companies in the region, including Singapore-based proptech startup Mogul.sg and Thai-based Life Below Labs.
