Motunrayo Adebayo: Shaping the Future of Privacy, AI Governance, and Digital Trust

I sat down with Motunrayo Adebayo having this expectation that this would not be another discussion on compliance forms and unresponsive legal laws. Rather, within a few minutes, I found out that Adebayo is not only a specialist about privacy, she is the one who believes in the changeability of privacy and ethical technology in our progressively digital society. She was very clear during our discussion that regulation of privacy is only a small part of the process to her, it is about gaining trust and letting people take charge of their personal information.

She said that: “she has always understood privacy as a living entity and she stated this early in our chat. It must come along with people. It must be able to fit culture, technology and even error. Unless it is able to elaborate on it, it remains words on paper”.

She considers the idea of privacy not within the old-time frame of compliance. Adebayo has a career in several continents, namely Africa, Europe, and North America, where she was involved in designing some of the most important data protection processes worldwide. However, she is not only about emphasising on the use of these regulations, but she is so much about entrenching the ingredient of privacy in the bones of companies.

When I asked Adebayo how she came to be known as the person working on privacy issues or AI governance, she laughed that she had not been aiming to pursue such reputation. It was more on how to resolve the problems businesses have in linking huge laws with simplest of operations.

During our conversation, she has outlined the fact that her work not only made her aware of the privacy concept but also made her the pioneer in adopting the process of implementing fully automated systems which organisations can find easy to handle privacy. She also automates privacy in systems which enable companies to undertake the most important tasks such as data mapping, notification of breaches and vendor management. To Adebayo, the thing is how to come up with means to simplify the complicated legal demands to the businesses as well as instill confidence among the consumers.

The obtention of certificates by Adebayo indicates that she is a woman who does not want to be left behind in her profession. She is a certified Lead Auditor/Responsible AI professional, and lastly, has other qualifications which also portray her commitment of integrity in privacy and cybersecurity. There is no end to her curiosity, because she is also a student of the driverless car and ethical-designed technologies on her way to pursuing a Master of Science degree at the Indiana Wesleyan University.

The deeper we got into the world of AI that is under constant evolution, the more obvious it became that Adebayo was so much passionate about the fact that privacy and technology go hand-in-hand. She is sure that in the nearest future AI is both the biggest opportunity and danger with regard to privacy.

She said with confidence that “technology does not wait for the laws to be catched up. Thus, what we have to do is to put up ethical guardrails on the road-building process--and not the other way round”.

Responsible AI governance is one of the main areas she works on nowadays. Adebayo works on bias detection and bias mitigation in machine learning models, federated learning, and synthetic data, making sure that AI systems are not only privacy-preserving but also made in accordance with the international legislation (GDPR, etc.) and ISO/IEC standards. One of her major concerns is to make sure that the AI technologies will be transparent, ethical, and safe to every user. The most outstanding aspect about Adebayo personality is that she took lead in influencing how privacy in the world is governed. Her campaign of open, answerable, and just digital future appeals to people and companies who support her in having a similar idea.

Adebayo is not the only person fighting privacy frameworks worldwide; she is trying to make privacy come to the areas where it is needed. One cannot simply copy paste a regulation adopted in one geography to apply in another region, she said. Expectations and situation of people are important. The solutions must be able to work. Her work has helped modify international privacy structures to fit local culture through the partnerships she has made with governments and nonprofits in Africa and Southeast Asia. It is also this flexible mindset that has got her involved in the formulation of data protection laws in emerging economies so that the privacy of all citizens is not a privilege but a right.

Our meeting ended when Adebayo explained once again that trust is paramount nowadays in the digital environment where AI and data sharing are becoming stronger and stronger. Privacy has nothing to do with boxes checking. It is also ensuring that people do not have the fear that their data is not safe, secure and handled with care. The future of privacy and AI governance is being created through the work of Motunrayo Adebayo and it is going to have a permanent footprint on the digital society. She promotes ethically correct behavior, openness, and cultural flexibility that is making organisations not only meet the regulations but to pursue privacy as a key organisation value that builds trust and empowerment.

As we move further in the world of digital transformation, it is high time to remember the words of Adebayo, telling us that it is not only possible to create the responsible and ethical future of digital but also obligatory.
