status anxiety by Alain de Botton

status anxiety book

I get a little bit freaked every now and imagining what if I am transported unexpectedly into the past. As flawless as it is, I'm jealous of the luxuries that I have now. I really can't imagine going back in comparison with ours to these terrible days.

In life, we want more:

Injustice has been presented in the past as reasonable in the world's natural order. It was challenging to challenge the willingness of the maker to the explanation. That those citizens were sentenced to cultivate land during other banquet halls. Though the men to attain material freedom were incomplete, the souls of men were not degraded. The market movement was also the foundation of the idea that men were called to a noble destiny and able to start a great career.

We cannot control everything:

We are now in a fast-moving, volatile and evolving economy with our position. Yet, we do not know our success. Because we can't put our abilities to the fore, the achievement has a lucky factor our employer's expectations decide our success and status.

Spirituality allows one to see a dual outlook on life:

Religion provides a dual image of a decent life in the worldly and eternal state and thus provides a means of achieving one-dimensional oppressive prosperity. In this respect, you should be spiritually wealthy, but worldly poor and suffering can coexist with goodness. The thinking about death can be a solemn call to decide our goals and to lead us away from rank to a real, more fulfilling way of life. Time and death grant us insignificance of our own, eliminating our unnecessarily important feeling for our ventures and worries.

Art helps us to balance our morality:

The critique of life is art. Great artists are constantly seeking to convey through their art their desire for a better future. Most individuals who have external effects that can keep their focus fleeting can identify the best in society. However, regardless of conditions, some decent people will never have an epic life. We may begin to see in reading the books and the intricacy of their characters. How we often slip into errors such as adultery or murder was given certain circumstances.

And use a Bohemian way of living:

In Bohemian society, an inspired dialog or authorship of an insightful, heartfelt volume of poetry can more readily be obtained by status rather than financial achievement and prestige in front of the public.

What a book that opens the mind. Status Anxiety poses several problems that I really have to contend with. I've already wanted to challenge the time and energy-wasting parts of the status quo, and the book has just inspired me to keep this activity.
