Toronto, Ontario — The 2021 wildfire season in North America has so far been one of the worst on record. In Canada, 6,022 wildfires have been reported by the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Center (CIFFC) as of August 23, 2021, and these fires have burned a total of at least 10 million acres.
But the damage caused by wildfires isn’t constrained to the area they burn. Wildfire smoke has been shown to travel across the width of the continent, shrouding skylines and causing blood-red skies in the middle of the day thousands of miles from the origin of the fire.
Wildfire smoke contains a variety of harmful pollutants. Particularly harmful is particulate matter, which is regarded by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a significant threat to human health.
