Are Mushrooms Keto Friendly?

Can you use Mushrooms as part of your Keto Diet?

Ketogenic diet or keto as it is popularly known is designed to have low carbohydrates and high-fat content with a moderate amount of protein. The Keto diet was originally designed to help manage epileptic seizures in children, although it's today used mainly to promote weight loss and support type 2 diabetes.

The Keto diet requires people to limit their overall daily carbohydrate intake to less than 50 grams a day as this will allow them to achieve a state of ketosis. Ketosis occurs when your body uses ketone bodies instead of glucose as the primary source of energy. One can only stay within the desired keto carb range only if they know the carbohydrate content of the foods that they normally eat.

While carbohydrate content of common foods is common knowledge, finding the carb content of non-regular foods such as Mushrooms can be a bit difficult. One may wonder about the carbohydrate content of different types of mushrooms. This article will discuss if mushrooms can be included in a keto-friendly diet and how one can use them while following a keto diet.

Carb content of Mushrooms

There are different varieties of mushrooms, and some of the most common types of mushrooms have low carbohydrates in their natural form. For example, a 1 cup serving of raw, whole white button mushrooms equivalent to 96 grams of mushrooms contains just 3 grams of carbohydrates. While a cup of raw oyster and shiitake mushrooms contain 6 and 7 grams of carbohydrates respectively. Portobello mushrooms also contain 3 grams of carbohydrates in a 1-cup serving.

Mushrooms not only have low carb content but are also rich in fiber. Fiber is usually tough to get on a keto diet since it's found in carb-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Very few low-carb foods such as mushrooms, nuts, seeds, and avocado contain fiber.

It's highly unlikely that you will ever go over and above your daily carb limit if you include mushrooms as part of your keto diet until and unless you plan to consume more than 6 or 7 cups of mushrooms daily or if you use mushrooms as part of a carb-heavy grain dish.

Make sure that you read the label of packed or canned mushrooms as these may not be low in carbohydrates and may contain extra added carbs or other ingredients that are rich in carbs. For example, a half-cup or 120 ml serving of Campbell's Cream of Mushroom prepared soup contains 8 grams of carbs, with each can containing 2.5 servings per can thus leading to 20 grams of carbs in a single can.

How to eat mushrooms on a Keto Diet

Mushrooms can be eaten both raw or cooked as part of a keto diet. You can also experiment a bit and add mushrooms to other low-carb foods that are part of your keto diet.

You can incorporate mushrooms into your keto diet in the following ways:

  • Cooked with scrambled eggs or added to an omelet

  • Sliced raw and added to a green leafy salad

  • Added to a stir-fry zucchini noodles, tofu, or low carb veggies

  • Sauteed with coconut or olive oil, herbs, and garlic on the stovetop
