You may need to sell your home quickly for a variety of reasons, and in the ensuing frenzy, you don't want any details to slip through the cracks. By being prepared, you can spare yourself a great deal of anxiety.

We surveyed the best realtors in Austin, Texas, for their top advice on how to make your big move to Austin go as smoothly as possible. Here are their top five tips.

1. Start Packing Now

You shouldn't put off packing until the last possible minute because that will just create more stress and chaos for you and your family. At the very least, you should get started packing at least a month in advance of the big day. When packing, it's best to get the least-used rooms and closets out of the way first, and save the everyday necessities (clothing, toiletries, cooking utensils, etc.) for the last few days before the move.

2. Reduce Your Belongings

Here's your chance to get some additional cash by going through your belongings and selling the things that haven't been used in a while. Afterward, you can donate the remaining items to a charity such as Goodwill, a Habitat for Humanity ReStore, a religious institution, or a place for the homeless. The less stuff you have, the easier the packing will be.

3. Change Your Address to Your New One

When changing your address with the US Postal Service, it's best to do it at least a couple of weeks before your move. It will give the post office time to update their records, but it will also give you time to notify other entities, such as the state (driver's license, vehicle, and voter registration), financial institutions, credit card providers, etc., of your new address.

4. Cancel or Transfer Utilities

Piggybacking on the previous point, make sure the last utility bill you receive is forwarded to your new address if you receive them on paper. There are some instances where you might be able to have your utility services switched to your new home without experiencing any disruption in service. When relocating from out of state, however, your real estate agent may be able to help you arrange to have utilities connected at your new home.

5. Do a Final Walkthrough

You will have another chance to inspect your new home just before the deal is officially complete. This is something you should not skip over! As part of your final inspection, you should double check that everything looks good and works as intended. You should check for the presence of the appliances if the contract specifies their inclusion. You should also look for promised repairs that are spelled out in the contract.

It's thrilling to move into a new home, but it may be stressful to do so, especially if your new home is located in a whole new city (or state!). On the other hand, having a plan, a moving checklist, and approaching things in a step-by-step fashion can help you alleviate some of the strain that comes along with moving. If you're feeling overwhelmed, stop for a moment and relax.

These suggestions are meant to ease your transition to life in Austin, Texas. Get in touch with your real estate agent if you have any issues or questions regarding the area you're considering moving to. Always keep in mind that a top-notch agent is on your side throughout the process.
