Dr. Chriska Mustafa: Planting Smiles and Trees in Her Community

Dr Chriska Mustafa talks about how she gives back to her community.

In the midst of dental operations, it's not common to find a fusion of dental care with global reforestation. But for Dr. Chriska Mustafa, her dental practice goes beyond oral health, aiming to make a direct, positive impact on the community and the world.

"We have partnered with One Tree Planted," Dr. Chriska began. This international nonprofit is dedicated to global reforestation. They not only plant trees to restore nature and biodiversity but also raise awareness about the importance of trees. They present businesses with a sustainability solution and motivate younger generations toward environmental actions.

The seeds of this partnership were sown from Dr. Chriska's love for nature and her desire to counteract the dental industry's ecological footprint.

"I’ve always had a passion for planting and gardening," she shared. "Given the many non-reusable items we use in dentistry, I wanted to find a way to give back. That led me to One Tree Planted."

Her dental practice actively participates in these community efforts.

"For our first 100 patients, we’re committing to plant trees. For every patient referred to us from an existing patient, we'll plant trees for both," Dr. Chriska explained.

They ensure that these trees are planted in the Appalachians or even organize local tree-planting events.

She believes the dental community has an essential role in societal well-being.

"We often expect the community to support us," she noted. "But we also need to think about how we can give back."

The community learns about her practice and its values mainly through word of mouth.

"Trees clean our air and water and contribute to our health. It's about promoting health and giving back to our planet," she emphasized.

In the future, Dr. Chriska aims to expand her initiatives.

"I’d love to hold local events once or twice a year," she said. "I envision the community, especially children, coming together for the environment."

Her advice for fellow dental professionals is straightforward:

"Find something you're truly passionate about. It might seem unrelated to dentistry, but with genuine intent, you can bridge the gap. Break from the norm and champion something meaningful to you."

Dr. Chriska Mustafa is a testament to the fact that professionals, even in the realm of dentistry, can make a significant difference – one tooth and one tree at a time.
