Texas Back Institute (TBI) , a world leader in advancing spine technology, science, education and surgery, has given a 14 year-old boy from Tanzania, thanks to a philanthropic partnership with Stand Tall International, an organization dedicated to arranging and funding life-saving spinal surgeries for children with severe deformities, and Medical City Frisco, an acute care hospital serving the larger Frisco community, and the host hospital for TBI’s Dr. Isador Lieberman’s surgery for the young patient, Benwadi.

The collaboration demonstrates the power nonprofit, medical and surgical partnership to help people with several spinal deformities to have an opportunity to live healthy, thriving lives.
“In the U.S. alone there are over seven million cases of scoliosis, but treatment is readily available for residents,” explained Dr. Lieberman. “In other parts of the world, treatment is not readily available and patients live with pain, limited mobility, conditions affecting other organs in the body, and are often shunned by the community.”
Benwadi had severe scoliosis, which manifested in a corkscrewed spine and an inability to walk, play or run like other children. Benwadi’s scoliosis was so severe it was also affecting his internal organs. TBI’s Dr. Lieberman was able to successfully perform surgery that allowed Benwadi to move, dance – and smile again.

Dr. Lieberman continued, “Our expertise in treating spinal conditions and injury allows us to help these individuals go from hopeless to hopeful lives, with the support and collaboration of Frisco Medical Hospital and Stand Tall International.”
A total of four surgeries were performed, and Benwadi and his guardian have now successfully returned to their home in Tanzania.
