7 Additional SMEs Train their HGV Drivers Through HGVC Skills Bootcamps

HGVC Boosts UK Logistics with Government-Backed HGV Training at 60 Locations Nationwide"

At HGVC, we’ve been playing a central part in fighting against the HGV driver shortage in the UK since it began, with our government-backed HGV skills bootcamp scheme being made available across the country. Created through our work in the Driver Academy Group consortium, alongside Manpower and Logistics UK, this scheme is designed to empower people to enjoy a rewarding career as a professional HGV driver while providing businesses with a steady supply of qualified drivers.

Driver shortages continue to contribute to market headwinds in the haulage industry, but the skills developed through our Department for Education-funded (DfE) bootcamps offer a lifeline for logistics firms. What’s more, we’re proud to say that we’re currently helping seven additional SME logistics firms in the UK to train new drivers.

90% of Cost Funded By the DfE

The flexible scheme was first launched back in December of 2021 and continues today after it was originally only supposed to have been running for 12 months. The ongoing demand for new drivers caused the DfE to extend the program, which meets 90% of the training costs for employers with fewer than 250 employees, multiple times. The employer need only pay 10% of the course cost.

While we’re delighted to be helping the companies we’re currently working with, we could be training more. In fact, over the next two years, there are up to 1,900 places available. Any interested firms should get in touch with us, as demand is high and availability won’t last forever.

Focusing on Three Pathways to Success

As part of our support for UK employers, we’re focusing on upskilling their staff through three distinct pathways, which break down as follows:

● Helping novice drivers gain their Category C (rigid lorry) licence.

● Assisting novice drivers to attain their Category C+E (articulated lorry) licence.

● Supporting those with a Category C licence upgrade to a Cat C+E licence.

Speaking about the scheme and its future, HGVC’s Head of marketing, Prath Kamat had this to say:

“We are now helping seven SME firms train existing employees, but we have the capacity to train more. That’s why we’re encouraging SMEs to apply for the HGV Skills Bootcamps scheme, 90% funded by the DfE. For employers considering training budgets, this is a great opportunity to train existing staff. With this funding, we can get even more drivers behind the wheel and keep Britain moving.”
