The media project Ukraїner International is launching the podcast series “Decolonisation,” which will explore the process of freeing Ukraine and Europe from Russia's imperial legacy. In each episode, the hosts will speak with international experts on the topic of decolonising history, culture, politics, collective memory, and information.
The guest of the first episode, which is released in English on 9 September, will be Catherine Fieschi, a Franco-British political scientist, researcher on populism, and author of numerous books and academic works on populism and totalitarianism. In the next episode, on 16 September, Jade McGlynn, a British historian and researcher on Russian hybrid threats, will share her expertise. At the beginning of October, an episode is planned with French philosopher, director, and writer Bernard-Henri Lévy, who has been visiting Ukraine regularly since 2014 and advocates for the interests of Ukrainians worldwide. The conversations with experts will be hosted by Ukraїner International’s Editor-in-Chief, Anastasiia Marushevska.
The "Decolonisation" project aims to dispel narratives about Ukraine in Europe that have been created since the times of Muscovy and the USSR. These narratives still persist because Russian influence has permeated political, cultural, and other spheres in Europe. Educational and academic programs, in particular, are often built on Russian narratives and remain dominant.
"We invite you to join our new podcast series where we will explore how Russia intervenes in education, culture, history, and other areas to destroy Ukrainian identity. Together with experts, we will debunk numerous narratives, myths, and misconceptions about Ukraine that Russians spread across Europe. We will also include the experiences of Poland and the Czech Republic, highlighting how their histories have also been distorted by Russian influence. Discover how these processes affect global perceptions and what international institutions can do to support the decolonisation of Ukraine," said Anastasiia Marushevska.
The episodes will be produced in English, Polish, and Czech on the following platforms. The launch of the Polish and Czech versions is planned for the end of September. The host of the Polish version will be Juliia Ivanochko, editor-in-chief and coordinator of Ukraїner po polsku; the Czech version will be hosted by Marharyta Holobrodska, editor-in-chief and coordinator of Ukraïner v češtině.
The project is supported by the USAID/ENGAGE (Enhance Non-Governmental Actors and Grassroots Engagement).
