In order to further strengthen the safety management of confined space operations, STATE GRID NINGDONG ELECTRIC POWER SUPPLY COMPANY recently organized a standardized operations drill for confined space work to raise awareness and strictly prevent safety accidents.
It is reported that toxic and harmful gas poisoning, as well as asphyxiation due to oxygen deficiency, are common risks in confined spaces and can easily lead to personal injury or death. Many accidents are further exacerbated by reckless rescue attempts. The personal risk associated with confined space work is one of the "five types" of group fatalities and injuries specifically identified in the company’s special campaign to "combat the three violations and eliminate the five hazards."
The drill was based on the actual maintenance conditions on-site. During the exercise, it simulated a scenario where workers performing confined space operations in a cable trench developed difficulty breathing and abnormal symptoms. Emergency response and personnel rescue procedures were carried out. Upon arrival, the workers put on full-body safety harnesses, gloves, helmets, and positive pressure air respirators, and immediately ventilated the cable trench while connecting a blower to supply oxygen. After ventilation, gas detectors were used to test for harmful gases. Once the air quality was confirmed to be safe, rescue personnel set up a rescue tripod, secured safety ropes, and equipped lighting and walkie-talkies before descending into the trench to carry out the operation. During the operation, a designated supervisor maintained communication with the workers in the trench. After half an hour of tense and orderly practice, the injured personnel were successfully treated, and the drill was completed successfully.
Through this drill, Ningdong Company focused on enhancing emergency knowledge, self-rescue, mutual aid, and escape skills for confined space work. The training aimed to achieve the goal of "training through drills, and applying through practice."
Moving forward, STATE GRID NINGDONG ELECTRIC POWER SUPPLY COMPANY will continue to improve specialized emergency plans and on-site handling procedures, strengthen the provision of emergency equipment and materials, conduct regular drills, and continuously improve the emergency response capabilities of on-site personnel. The company aims to develop standardized operational procedures for confined space work in cable trenches and mitigate potential risks.
