Possible antidote discovered for deadliest mushroom: study

Researchers said on Tuesday that an already widely used medical dye reduces the poisonous effects of death cap mushrooms in mice, raising hopes of the first targeted antidote for the world's deadliest mushroom.. The team now intends to conduct trials on humans using the dye as a death cap antidote. 

Two new skeletons found at Pompeii excavations

Archaeologists at Pompeii said Tuesday that they had uncovered two new skeletons of male victims who likely died in an earthquake that accompanied the devastating volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius, which buried the Italian city in ash in AD 79.. The earthquake struck as the huge blast from nearby Mount Vesuvius covered the city of Pompeii with thick volcanic ash, preserving the bodies of many of its residents.

Coming years 'critical' to slash plastic pollution: UN

The world must halve single-use plastics and slash throwaway consumption to stem the tide of environmental pollution, according to a UN report on Tuesday that warns the next few years are critical.  . "The next three to five years present a critical window for action to set the world on the path towards implementing the systems change scenario by 2040," it warned.

In a first, US climate scientists have quantified the extent to which greenhouse gasses from the world's top fossil fuel companies have contributed to wildfires.. - Growing area of research -  The research builds on an accumulating body of climate "attribution" studies, which have calculated how much greenhouse gas emissions from burning fossil fuels have contributed to global temperature increases, sea level rise, and ocean acidification.

Cleaning up decades-long oil pollution and restoring environmental health in just one of Nigeria's crude-producing states will cost at least $12 billion, investigators said on Tuesday.. "At least $12 billion" is needed to "clean up the soil and drinking water, reduce the health risk to people and restore mangrove forests essential to stopping floods." 

French Polynesia nuke tests slightly increased cancer risk: study

Polynesians exposed to fallout from France's nuclear tests in the South Pacific have a slightly increased risk of developing thyroid cancer, a study suggested on Monday that used declassified military data for the first time.. "This is the proportion of thyroid cancer attributable to the tests among all the cases of thyroid cancer that have or will develop in the people present at the time of the tests, in all islands combined," the study's lead author Florent de Vathaire told AFP.  The impact of the nuclear tests was "weak but not at all non-existent," said de Vathaire, a radiation expert at France's INSERM medical research institute.

Singapore to host Prince William's Earthshot Prize

Singapore will host the next awards ceremony for Prince William's Earthshot Prize that aims to reward innovative efforts to combat climate change, a statement said Monday.. "The Earthshot Prize is all about showing the world that solutions to some of the biggest environmental challenges we face are out there," said William, who is heir to his father King Charles III.  The ceremony in Singapore will take place on November 7 and will feature performances by "word-renowned musicians and artists", according to the statement.
