Clashes in Georgia over contentious 'foreign agents' law

Georgian police used tear gas and water cannon against protesters Tuesday as thousands of demonstrators took to the streets in the capital Tbilisi to oppose a controversial "foreign agents" bill.. At one point a protester opposed to the law, which would impose registration requirements on media and NGOs with foreign ties, threw a Molotov cocktail at a cordon of riot police, according to television footage.

Venezuela's Guaido to stand in opposition primary elections

Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido will stand in primary election to choose a rival to President Nicolas Maduro in the 2024 election, his party said on Tuesday.. While Guaido can take part in the opposition primaries, it is not clear that he would be allowed to actually stand in the 2024 election.

UN wants action from China on human rights concerns

United Nations rights chief Volker Turk on Tuesday demanded action from Beijing to address "grave concerns" over the human rights situation in China's Xinjiang province.. US ambassador Michele Taylor urged the council Tuesday to "take action to address the egregious and ongoing violation of human rights in Xinjiang".

Iran arrests school poisoning suspects as cases top 5,000

Iran announced Tuesday it had made the first arrests in a spate of mystery poisonings of schoolgirls that has affected more than 5,000 pupils since late November.. "Twenty-five (out of 31) provinces and approximately 230 schools have been affected, and more than 5,000 schoolgirls and boys poisoned," Mohammad-Hassan Asafari, a member of the parliamentary fact-finding committee, told the ISNA news agency on Monday.

Hundreds mourn Ukrainian saboteurs killed in Russia

Hundreds of mourners packed a Kyiv church on Tuesday for the funeral of volunteers killed on a sabotage mission in Russia, following a spate of attacks along  Moscow's frontier.. Mourners, many in camouflage and covering their faces, attended a service in a central church for four men -- one still a teenager -- killed in December during an incursion into Russia's southern Bryansk region.

17 killed, 100 injured in Bangladesh building blast

At least 17 people were killed and more than 100 injured after an explosion struck an office building in the Bangladeshi capital's commercial district on Tuesday, police and medics said.. "At least 17 people have died, including two women," police inspector Bacchu Mia told AFP.  More than 112 people were treated for head wounds, fractures and other injuries at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital, hospital director Nazmul Islam told AFP.  "The pattern of the injuries shows that it was a huge explosion," he said, adding that hundreds of doctors and nurses were mobilised.
